Job Description
Montefiore Health System is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Radiation Protection Advisor to join our Environmental Health and Safety team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe use of radiation sources throughout our facilities, protecting patients, staff, and the public from potential radiation hazards. This includes developing, implementing, and monitoring radiation safety programs, conducting risk assessments, providing expert advice, and ensuring strict compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in health physics, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to fostering a culture of safety. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g., NRC, EPA, state health codes).
- Conduct regular radiation surveys, dose assessments, and environmental monitoring to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Provide expert guidance and consultation to medical staff, researchers, and other personnel on radiation safety protocols and practices.
- Manage radioactive material inventories, procurement, use, and disposal, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Investigate radiation safety incidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop and deliver radiation safety training programs for various levels of personnel.
- Stay current with advancements in radiation protection technology, regulations, and best practices.
- Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in radiation protection or health physics, preferably in a healthcare or research setting.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state radiation safety regulations (e.g., NRC, EPA, NYSDOH).
- Proficiency in radiation detection instrumentation and dosimetry principles.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective training programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Health Physics or a related field.
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP).
- Experience with hospital accreditation processes (e.g., Joint Commission).
- Familiarity with medical imaging modalities and radiation therapy equipment.
