Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Percussion Specialist to join our high school marching band program. This critical role involves providing expert instruction, leading rehearsals, and contributing to the overall success and musical development of our high school percussionists. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in marching percussion, excellent pedagogical skills, and a dedication to cultivating a positive and disciplined learning environment. This position requires a collaborative spirit, an ability to work effectively with band directors and staff, and a deep commitment to student achievement in the percussive arts.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver comprehensive percussion instruction for high school marching band students, focusing on both battery and front ensemble.
- Lead and supervise efficient and engaging percussion sectionals and rehearsals.
- Collaborate with the head band director and other music staff on show design, music arrangement, and performance strategies for the percussion ensemble.
- Provide individualized and group coaching on a wide range of percussion instruments and techniques.
- Prepare students for high-level performances, competitions, and auditions.
- Assist with the maintenance, organization, and inventory of all percussion instruments and equipment.
- Attend and contribute to all scheduled marching band rehearsals, performances, competitions, and summer camps.
- Foster a positive, disciplined, and encouraging atmosphere that promotes musical growth and teamwork.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding student progress and program goals.
Required Skills
- Expert proficiency in all marching percussion instruments (snare drum, tenor drums, bass drums, cymbals).
- Comprehensive knowledge of mallet percussion techniques and repertoire.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching and coaching high school-level percussionists.
- Ability to read, interpret, and teach complex musical scores and arrangements.
- Strong pedagogical skills and a passion for working with young musicians.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Valid Texas driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift and move percussion equipment as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or a related field.
- Previous experience as a marching band percussion instructor or arranger at the high school or collegiate level.
- Experience with front ensemble arranging and instruction.
- Proficiency with music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale, Musescore).
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Familiarity with UIL (University Interscholastic League) marching band rules and regulations.
