Job Description
Are you passionate about music and love working with children? The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is seeking an enthusiastic and creative After-School Music Program Leader to inspire our young participants. This role is perfect for students, aspiring educators, or anyone with a talent for music and a desire to create a fun, engaging, and educational experience. You will be responsible for leading music-related activities, fostering a positive group dynamic, and ensuring a safe environment for all children in our after-school program.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead engaging music-based activities, including singing, rhythm exercises, basic instrument instruction, and music appreciation.
- Supervise a group of children (ages 5-12) during after-school hours, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and fun learning environment where children feel comfortable exploring music.
- Manage classroom behavior effectively and implement program rules consistently.
- Communicate regularly with program coordinators regarding child progress, concerns, and program needs.
- Prepare and organize all necessary materials and equipment for music sessions.
- Encourage creativity, teamwork, and self-expression through music.
- Assist with other after-school program duties as needed.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in at least one musical instrument (e.g., piano, guitar, voice) or strong vocal ability.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and interact positively with children.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
- Reliability and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to pass a background check and comply with all YMCA child safety standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or possessing a degree/certificate in Music, Education, Child Development, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with school-aged children in a formal or informal setting (e.g., camp counselor, tutor, babysitter).
- Knowledge of various musical genres and cultural music traditions.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
