Job Description
The Long Center for the Performing Arts is seeking a passionate and skilled Community Choir Conductor to lead our evening choir sessions. This part-time role is perfect for an individual with a deep love for choral music and a desire to foster musical talent within our diverse community. You will be responsible for preparing, directing, and inspiring choir members of all skill levels, culminating in engaging public performances. This position requires strong musical leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to creating an inclusive and joyful rehearsal environment for participants from various backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct weekly evening choir rehearsals for mixed-ability adult groups.
- Select appropriate and diverse repertoire, ranging from classical to contemporary, suitable for community engagement.
- Develop and implement engaging rehearsal plans that improve vocal technique, sight-reading, and overall musicality.
- Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to choir members, fostering individual and collective growth.
- Prepare the choir for public performances and community outreach events, ensuring a high standard of musical presentation.
- Collaborate effectively with the Long Center programming team on event logistics, scheduling, and artistic vision.
- Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive atmosphere for all participants, encouraging camaraderie and shared musical experience.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in choral conducting and directing.
- Strong musicianship, including sight-reading proficiency and comprehensive vocal technique knowledge.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of inspiring and guiding diverse groups.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals with varying musical backgrounds and experience levels.
- Proficiency in music theory, harmony, and choral pedagogy.
- Exceptional organizational skills for planning rehearsals, managing scores, and coordinating performances.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music, Choral Conducting, Music Education, or a related field.
- Experience working specifically with community or amateur choirs.
- Knowledge of various choral genres, styles, and performance practices.
- Familiarity with the Austin arts and music scene, and local community engagement initiatives.
