Job Description
Are you passionate about the outdoors and inspiring others to connect with nature? REI is seeking enthusiastic and responsible Part-time Outdoor Leaders to facilitate unforgettable weekend adventure experiences in the Pasco area. This role is perfect for individuals who thrive in outdoor settings, possess strong leadership skills, and are committed to safety and environmental stewardship. You will lead groups on various outdoor activities, ensuring a positive, educational, and safe experience for all participants.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead weekend outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, cycling, and basic camping trips for groups of varying skill levels.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, adhering to REI's safety protocols and industry best practices.
- Provide basic instruction on outdoor skills, gear use, and Leave No Trace principles.
- Manage group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and foster a positive and inclusive adventure environment.
- Conduct pre-trip briefings and post-trip debriefings, including equipment checks and feedback collection.
- Maintain all REI-provided equipment in excellent working order.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, administering first aid as needed and coordinating with emergency services.
- Represent REI's values and commitment to outdoor education and conservation.
- Assist with trip planning and logistics as required.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience leading outdoor activities or groups.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local trails, waterways, and outdoor environments in the Pasco region.
- Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or higher certification (WFR preferred).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and unexpected situations.
- Passion for the outdoors and a commitment to environmental ethics.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of gear.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications in specific outdoor activities (e.g., ACA Kayak Instructor, CWA Climbing Wall Instructor).
- Experience with diverse age groups and skill levels.
- Local knowledge of flora, fauna, and geology relevant to the Pasco area.
- Proficiency in basic navigation (map and compass, GPS).
