Job Description
SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Crew Chief to lead our field operations and project teams based out of our Colorado Springs office. This leadership role is critical for overseeing all aspects of paleontological fieldwork, from pre-field planning and logistics to on-site supervision and post-field reporting. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring project success, maintaining scientific rigor, adhering to safety protocols, and mentoring junior staff. You will play a key role in protecting significant paleontological resources in compliance with federal and state regulations, contributing to important scientific discoveries, and delivering high-quality results for our diverse client base.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage paleontological field crews, including scheduling, logistics, and resource allocation.
- Oversee the identification, recovery, documentation, and preliminary preparation of paleontological resources.
- Ensure all fieldwork is conducted in compliance with project scopes, budgets, schedules, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, state-specific paleontology laws).
- Implement and enforce SWCA's health and safety policies and procedures in the field.
- Perform quality control for field data collection, including GPS/GIS mapping, stratigraphic interpretation, and photographic documentation.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, site forms, and project deliverables.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior paleontologists and field technicians.
- Coordinate effectively with project managers, clients, landowners, and regulatory agencies.
- Assist in proposal development and project budgeting as needed.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological resource management, with significant field leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading field crews and managing complex paleontological projects.
- Expertise in vertebrate paleontology field methods, including excavation, plaster jacketing, and data recording.
- Strong understanding of federal and state paleontological resource laws and regulations.
- Proficiency with GPS/GIS technologies for data collection and mapping.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in challenging outdoor environments and remote locations for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology or a related field.
- Experience with Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossil assemblages of the Western United States.
- Previous experience with consulting firm operations and client management.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
