Job Description

Join the CNIB Foundation as a Braille Transcription & Accessibility Intern and contribute to our mission of empowering individuals with blindness. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Braille transcription, tactile graphic creation, and general accessibility support. You will play a vital role in making information and services accessible, directly impacting the lives of Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. This on-site role is perfect for someone passionate about accessibility, eager to learn, and committed to making a difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transcribe various documents into Braille, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established Braille standards.
  • Assist in the creation and production of tactile graphics and other accessible materials.
  • Support the accessibility team with administrative tasks, research, and project coordination.
  • Learn to use specialized Braille transcription software and equipment.
  • Review and proofread Braille documents for errors and quality control.
  • Contribute to wider accessibility initiatives and awareness campaigns.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding or strong interest in Braille (training will be provided)
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for accessibility and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant program (e.g., Library and Information Science, Education, Accessibility Studies, Linguistics)
  • Familiarity with accessibility guidelines and standards (e.g., WCAG)
  • Previous volunteer experience in a non-profit or accessibility-focused organization
  • Knowledge of other assistive technologies
