Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Hospice Support Assistant to join our compassionate team in Gastown, Vancouver. This vital role involves providing direct support to patients and their families in a hospice setting, ensuring comfort, dignity, and a peaceful environment. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal skills, a profound sense of empathy, and a commitment to providing the highest standard of care during a sensitive time. You will work closely with nurses, doctors, and other support staff to create a supportive and comforting atmosphere for our residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, mobility, and feeding, always maintaining respect and dignity.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, listening attentively and offering a calming presence.
  • Help maintain a clean, tidy, and comfortable environment for patients, ensuring rooms are orderly and supplies are stocked.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient condition or behavior to the nursing staff promptly and accurately.
  • Assist with light administrative tasks, such as updating patient charts or organizing activity schedules.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to care planning discussions.
  • Support recreation and activity programs designed to enhance patient well-being.
  • Adhere to all health and safety protocols, as well as organizational policies and procedures.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in a caregiving, support, or customer service role, preferably within a healthcare or hospice environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a gentle and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical ability to assist patients with mobility and perform light lifting.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a Health Care Assistant (HCA) program or equivalent certification.
  • Experience working with palliative care patients or in a hospice setting.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Fluency in additional languages relevant to Vancouver's diverse population.
