Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Hospice Support Assistant to join our compassionate team in Gastown, Vancouver. This vital role involves providing direct support to patients and their families in a hospice setting, ensuring comfort, dignity, and a peaceful environment. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal skills, a profound sense of empathy, and a commitment to providing the highest standard of care during a sensitive time. You will work closely with nurses, doctors, and other support staff to create a supportive and comforting atmosphere for our residents.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist patients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, mobility, and feeding, always maintaining respect and dignity.
- Provide emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, listening attentively and offering a calming presence.
- Help maintain a clean, tidy, and comfortable environment for patients, ensuring rooms are orderly and supplies are stocked.
- Monitor and report changes in patient condition or behavior to the nursing staff promptly and accurately.
- Assist with light administrative tasks, such as updating patient charts or organizing activity schedules.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to care planning discussions.
- Support recreation and activity programs designed to enhance patient well-being.
- Adhere to all health and safety protocols, as well as organizational policies and procedures.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in a caregiving, support, or customer service role, preferably within a healthcare or hospice environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a gentle and empathetic approach.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to assist patients with mobility and perform light lifting.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Health Care Assistant (HCA) program or equivalent certification.
- Experience working with palliative care patients or in a hospice setting.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Fluency in additional languages relevant to Vancouver's diverse population.
