Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and innovative Principal Medicinal Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team in Cleveland, Ohio. This critical role involves leading drug discovery projects from target validation through lead optimization, focusing on small molecule therapeutics for various disease areas. The successful candidate will apply expert medicinal chemistry knowledge, strategic thinking, and strong leadership to drive project progression and mentor junior scientists. You will be instrumental in designing, synthesizing, and optimizing novel compounds with desired pharmacological profiles, contributing significantly to our pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage complex medicinal chemistry projects, defining scientific strategies and experimental plans to achieve project goals.
- Design and synthesize novel small molecules with optimized potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetics, and safety profiles.
- Interpret complex SAR data, propose and prioritize new targets, and troubleshoot synthetic challenges.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with biology, DMPK, toxicology, and computational chemistry teams to drive integrated project progression.
- Mentor and guide junior medicinal chemists, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and innovation.
- Present research findings effectively at internal meetings and external conferences.
- Contribute to patent applications, scientific publications, and regulatory submissions.
- Stay abreast of current literature, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape in medicinal chemistry.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in medicinal chemistry in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting.
- Demonstrated track record of scientific leadership and contributions to drug discovery programs, including successful identification of clinical candidates.
- Expertise in modern synthetic organic chemistry techniques and reaction mechanisms.
- Strong understanding of drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and structure-activity relationships (SAR).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various therapeutic areas, such as oncology, neuroscience, immunology, or infectious diseases.
- Proficiency in computational chemistry tools and techniques (e.g., molecular modeling, docking) for lead optimization.
- Experience in managing external collaborations (CROs) for synthetic chemistry or biological testing.
- Prior experience as a project leader or significant leadership role within a drug discovery team.
