Job Description
Are you a passionate and aspiring veterinary professional eager to gain invaluable hands-on experience in a dynamic small animal clinic environment? VCA Animal Hospitals is offering an exciting Veterinary Medicine Internship for individuals dedicated to a career in veterinary medicine. This internship provides an immersive learning experience, allowing you to observe, assist, and learn from experienced veterinarians and technicians in daily clinic operations, diagnostics, treatments, and client communication. You will contribute to the welfare of our beloved animal patients while developing crucial practical skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, procedures, and surgeries.
- Learn and practice proper animal handling and restraint techniques for various small animal species.
- Help maintain accurate patient records, including histories, treatments, and progress notes.
- Prepare examination rooms and surgical suites, ensuring cleanliness and sterility.
- Monitor hospitalized patients and assist with their daily care, feeding, and medication administration.
- Perform basic laboratory procedures such as preparing samples for analysis.
- Educate clients on preventative care, nutrition, and post-operative instructions under supervision.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
- Shadow veterinary professionals to observe client interactions and case management.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a veterinary technician program, pre-veterinary program, or related life science degree.
- Strong passion for animal welfare and a career in veterinary medicine.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and patience with animals and their owners.
- Basic understanding of animal anatomy and physiology.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods.
- Must be highly organized and detail-oriented.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or paid experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility.
- Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology.
- Certification in animal CPR or first aid.
- Experience with veterinary practice management software.
