Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Drilling Fluids Engineer (Mud Engineer) to join our dynamic team in North Yorkshire. This is a critical field-based role responsible for planning, executing, and optimizing drilling fluid programs to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective drilling operations. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of drilling fluid properties, wellbore stability, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) will be provided for eligible international candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement drilling fluid programs tailored to specific well conditions and geological formations.
- Conduct regular on-site testing and analysis of drilling fluids to monitor properties such as density, viscosity, filtration, and pH.
- Adjust fluid properties as necessary to maintain optimal drilling performance, prevent wellbore instability, and mitigate downhole problems.
- Manage drilling fluid inventory, including ordering, mixing, and supervising the proper handling and disposal of materials.
- Troubleshoot and resolve drilling fluid-related issues, such as lost circulation, stuck pipe, and formation damage.
- Maintain accurate records and reports of drilling fluid operations, including daily mud reports, material consumption, and cost analysis.
- Collaborate closely with drilling supervisors, rig crews, and geologists to ensure seamless integration of fluid management with overall drilling operations.
- Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and training to junior personnel as required.
- Participate in pre-spud meetings and post-well reviews to share insights and improve future operations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical) or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Drilling Fluids Engineer or Mud Engineer in the oil and gas industry.
- In-depth knowledge of various drilling fluid systems (WBM, OBM, SBM) and their applications.
- Proficiency in drilling fluid testing equipment and procedures.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively in a team environment.
- Commitment to HSE regulations and best practices.
- Ability to work extended hours in challenging field environments.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g., IWCF Well Control certification, NEBOSH).
- Experience with advanced drilling fluid technologies and software.
- Experience working in diverse geographical locations.
