Job Description
Are you a compassionate and proactive individual looking to make a genuine difference in your community? Age UK Exeter is seeking a dedicated Shopping & Mobility Aide to provide essential support to older adults. In this vital role, you will assist individuals with their shopping needs, ensuring they can access fresh food and household items, and provide mobility assistance to help them navigate their homes and local environments safely. Beyond practical help, you will offer valuable social interaction, reducing isolation and fostering a sense of connection within the community. This role is perfect for someone who is empathetic, reliable, and enjoys building meaningful relationships while empowering older people to live fulfilling and independent lives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide tailored assistance with grocery shopping, including planning, accompaniment, and carrying items.
- Assist clients with mobility needs, both within their homes and during outings, using appropriate aids and techniques.
- Offer companionship and engage in supportive conversations to combat loneliness and promote mental well-being.
- Help clients access local community services and activities, facilitating participation and social inclusion.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of clients at all times, responding promptly to any concerns or emergencies.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of visits and client progress.
- Liaise with family members, healthcare professionals, and other support services as needed, always respecting client privacy.
- Adhere to all Age UK Exeter policies and procedures, including safeguarding and health and safety guidelines.
Required Skills
- Exceptional empathy, patience, and a caring attitude towards older adults.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Ability to assist with light physical tasks, such as carrying shopping bags or supporting mobility.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and adapting to individual client needs.
- Basic understanding of first aid and emergency procedures.
- Valid UK Driving License and access to a reliable vehicle (mileage expenses reimbursed).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a care, support, or community outreach role.
- Relevant qualifications in health, social care, or a related field.
- Knowledge of local services and resources available to older people in Exeter.
- DBS check (or willingness to undergo one).
