Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Zoology & Animal Husbandry Intern to join our team, focusing on the maintenance and development of zoo enclosures. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in animal care, enclosure design, and the daily operations of a world-class zoological institution. You will work closely with experienced zookeepers and curatorial staff, contributing to the welfare and enrichment of our diverse animal collection.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist zookeepers with daily enclosure cleaning and maintenance procedures, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for animals.
- Participate in the preparation and distribution of animal diets, adhering to strict nutritional guidelines.
- Support the design and implementation of animal enrichment programs, promoting natural behaviors.
- Monitor animal behavior and report observations to senior staff, contributing to health and welfare assessments.
- Assist with minor repairs and landscaping within animal habitats under supervision.
- Maintain accurate records of enclosure conditions, animal activities, and project progress.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and animal handling procedures.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree/diploma program in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated passion for animal welfare and conservation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in various weather conditions.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic knowledge of animal behavior and husbandry principles.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform manual tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or paid experience in an animal care setting (e.g., zoo, sanctuary, shelter).
- Familiarity with basic hand tools and maintenance equipment.
- Valid G-class driver's license.
