Job Description

Heritage Auctions is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fossil Identification Expert with a strong focus on authentication to join our Natural History department. This is a crucial remote role for an individual with an unparalleled depth of knowledge in paleontology, capable of accurately identifying, cataloging, and most importantly, authenticating fossil specimens. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, extensive research capabilities, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity within the auction industry. This position offers the flexibility of working from home while contributing to the world’s leading collectibles auction house.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately identify and classify a wide range of fossil specimens, including vertebrates, invertebrates, and flora, across various geological periods.
  • Perform thorough authentication assessments to verify the originality, provenance, and scientific integrity of fossil specimens.
  • Conduct detailed research using paleontological literature, databases, and comparative collections to support identification and authentication conclusions.
  • Document findings comprehensively, including detailed descriptions, photographs, measurements, and any relevant geological or historical data.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including catalogers and specialists, to ensure accurate and compelling presentation of specimens for auction.
  • Stay current with new discoveries, scientific advancements, and emerging authentication techniques in paleontology.
  • Provide expert consultation and support for client inquiries regarding fossil authenticity and identification.
  • Assist in developing and refining authentication protocols and best practices for the Natural History department.

Required Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of paleontology, including fossil taxonomy, morphology, taphonomy, and stratigraphy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the identification of diverse fossil types from various geological eras.
  • Proven ability to authenticate fossil specimens, identify fakes, restorations, and misattributions.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with proficiency in accessing and interpreting scientific literature.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for detailed documentation and clear explanations.
  • High degree of attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a remote work environment.
  • Proficiency with digital imaging and database management tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Evolutionary Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in fossil identification and authentication, preferably within a museum, academic institution, or commercial setting.
  • Experience with various analytical techniques used in fossil authentication (e.g., microscopy, elemental analysis, radiography).
  • Familiarity with the auction market for natural history specimens.
  • Professional affiliations with paleontological societies or organizations.
